Bang Bang Lulu

COSTA bluebeat TO NORTHERN SOUL

I STAND ON THE OUTSIDE LOOKIN IN WITH CURIOUS CYNICISM.... MY CHEWING GUM AIN'T GOT NO TASTE LEFT AND I'M SHIVERING... THE DODGY NEON SIGN BURNS THE WORD "LOCARNO" INTO MY LATE NIGHT EYES AND A SMALL SIGN ABOVE THE ENTRANCE READS TENERE SEGRETO. "FULL OF POSERS..." I THINK TO MYSELF.

THERE'S A HAND MADE FLYER ON THE WALL... "TONIGHT LIVE BAND. BANG BANG LULU. SKA, BLUEBEAT AND BLUE EYED SOUL"

A GIRL ON THE DOOR SMILES OUT INTO THE DARKNESS "DON'T BE SHY, COME IN TO THE PALACE...."

"HEY" SHE SAYS STARING AT ME AS I STEP FORWARD INTO THE DIM LIGHT, "AREN'T YOU ONE OF THAT LOT THAT USED TO DANCE ALL NIGHT DOWN AT THE METRO?... WHERE THE HELL YOU BEEN HIDING?"

SUDDENLY I FEEL LIKE I'VE COME HOME

NEWS FLASH - BBL AT THE BROOK - SOUTHAMPTON - SAT AUGUST 1st - See News Page for more info.

Well, here YOU are, stood in the flickering glow of the foyer, which means that you either know where your interests lie, or you just stumbled down a dark alley and got "lucky". In the first event, go ahead, you know the way. in the second situation, we hope you'll take a minute to have a quick read below before you either step into the lights or head into the night.

This here is the official home of BBL, where the beat goes on, old, new, borrowed and blue. Here you can find out what's occurring, what tunes were comparing, what shirts were wearing and what little secrets were sharing. You can also see where and when we'll be popping up for a live appearance and when we have some happiness to tell you about.

where we rollin at...?

If you've never been part of it, then you might not even be aware that the U.K. has always been home to a collective of people who worship soul and ska music. This phenomena comes and goes like a saturday and a sunday morning, sometimes in your face and full of sparkle and at other times, hidden away in a comfortable, but dark corner. It has been around in one form or another for 6 decades, from the early jazzer's and modernists of the 1950's Soho, to the present day. Spanning generations of Scooterists, Rudie's and Soulie's that frequent clubs and rallies all over the British Isles, the soundtrack grows ever longer, the style changes, but the attitudes remain the same. As does the respect for the true roots of the music, which are widely acknowledged as being essentially Black American and Jamaican.

Pundits often talk about "revivals", certainly the late 70's saw a resurgence of media and mass public interest, but for those that took the music to heart rather than wear it as a passing fashion, the club has stayed open, but each time it gets too crowded they just change the venue....but hey! don't tell.

BBL is essentially a group of like minded individuals, who formed up to share the excitement of playing, writing and performing this righteously crazy music. We don't consider what we do as "revivalist" or paying tribute to anyone or anything in particular. We cover and copy many of those that went before us, sure, as is every musician's right, but we're also trying to put a little something back in. That said, were not purists and were trying not to take it all "too" seriously, hey, it's about having a laugh and a good time right, otherwise it's all ***ked?. So we take what we like, spit out what we don't and then we try to roll our own. it seems to work.
